Skin Basics Worth Knowing Before You Buy Anything

Before the serums and the ten-step evenings, there are four things about skin that make everything else easier to understand.

Skincare has become a hobby with its own vocabulary, and that vocabulary is doing a lot of selling. Underneath it, the fundamentals are unglamorous and short.

Your skin is not one fixed type

It shifts with weather, sleep, stress and the season. A routine built around a label you were given once will eventually stop matching what is actually happening on your face.

More products is not more care

Layering many active ingredients is one of the most common ways to end up with irritated skin. If something is not working, the answer is usually to remove a step rather than add one.

Give things time

Most changes are slow. Judging a product after four days tells you whether it stings, and very little else.

The most underrated skincare step is doing less of it, more consistently.

When to ask someone

If something is persistent, painful, changing, or making you avoid mirrors, that is a conversation with a professional rather than a shopping decision. A consultation is a reasonable first step, and often a short one.
